Hello, I know I’ve seen your face before
In dirt-dusted corridors beneath this teeming floor
And oh, we dug down together, seeking for the surface
Crime upon crime, piled behind our failing eyes.
Feed me shale, earth and dirt,
‘Till my bones turn to rust.
I know, I know what I’ve seen is not what I own
The bastard worship of the siren’s sing-along
And oh, the innocence dashed to pieces in our hands,
Crime upon crime layered within my thick’ning skin.
Drown me deeply, ‘till all memory
Sweetly leaves my gutted bones.

The Sound

“Dig with me beneath the surface
Where no gods or grace will follow
Sing with me this simple swan song
Slip beneath the sod and silt of…”
Deathly pale glow as my eyes sink below
Sweetly leave all of my memory above
Drag the rotten carcass to the funerary sight
Late but never shunned, and she is everything I own, oh -
- Fornicated bride.
“Dig with me beneath the surface” -
But I still hear a sound through the walls
Like a childhood memory
Of my grandmother’s voice,
Or living photosynthesis,
Or an unborn memory
Of a future lover’s sigh.

Claws Turn to Wings
05:56
|

I was born for love
I’ve become a mole
I dig my holes
In patterns mimicking
The paths of flying birds
In hopes that one day
My claws might find the surface
And turn to songbird wings.

Backyard Dig

Buried toy cars,
Broken rainbow colors -
Mother earth received them
With her smiling calm
Unknowing mother
Cautioned us to come inside,
And willingly we entered,
Blissful, ignorant
That rain water carries
What lies beneath sod
And exposes it again.
Again.

Dormant Seed

One day you’ll no longer
Have the breath to run from pain
The holes you’ve dug beneath
The floors of your sordid home
Will no longer hold the form
Of you and your chosen ones
And will instead become the bed
Of the waiting canine beast
Paralyzed but awake
Your lips will mouth the name
But no words will stay his teeth
And your marriage bed will stain.
And your -
And your marriage -
And your marriage bed will -
And your marriage bed will stain.
Only this way will you learn
How seeds must befriend the earth
To let their stems find the surface
And turn to sapling leaves.

Shovels

Shovel in hand
God-like and bruised
I’ve broken sod
In foreign land.
Weary eyes survey
A sky that I can’t know
Impossible blue
That I can never convey.
Symphonies soundless
Bound in soundness
I’m understood
Through silence.
Now all of your operas
Come back to me
A terrible cacophony
Of truths impossible, of beauty -
And your voice is a melody,
A sweet sting of energy,
Violence, strength and simplicity:
“Leave your sleep and come to me.”
